The Columbus County Health Department is urging all citizens to take precautions to protect themselves from flu as the number of cases and deaths related to flu continue to rise.

In turn, the Whiteville City School System is encouraging students and families to take measures to protect themselves and others. Important tips to remember include:

  • Make sure each family member receives a flu shot.  Although not perfect, it is THE BEST protection from flu. Flu season is expected to continue for 2-3 more months.

  • Avoid close contact with sick people.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth where germs easily enter your body.

  • Cough or sneeze in your sleeve - NOT your hand, or use a kleenex to cover your mouth and nose.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.

  • If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer.

  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with flu viruses, remembering that the virus can live for 24 hours on surfaces.

  • If you become sick, limit contact with others as much as possible.

  • Keep students home if they are sick.  They should remain home for at least 24 hours AFTER they last had fever without taking fever-reducing medications.

Thank you for helping us keep our students in the Whiteville City Schools safe and healthy.  If you have any questions please call the School Nurse at your student’s school.
